Crowdfunding is slowly becoming a recognised way in funding the needs of our communities. Where due to council and government constrains has put pressure on local fundraisers and challenged ideas by way of process and council “best practise” we can now see a way in which projects can be created and funded through community focused crowdfunding platforms.
If this sounds appealing, check out the rapidly growing number of community focused crowdfunding websites that are becoming an increasingly vital in helping raise funds for positive world changing projects:
Spacehive is the world’s first funding platform for civic projects. We make it easy for lots of people, companies and councils to fund things that make places better – like new playgrounds or spruced up parks. For people with great project ideas, Spacehive allows you to build support direct from your community.
Trillion Fund is a crowd financing platform for renewable energy projects consisting of a group of developers, asset managers, energy boffins, tech geeks, journalists and campaigners who are all motivated by two things: helping people to do something important (but still profitable) with their money and generating more clean energy for us to use.
ioby is a crowd-resourcing platform for citizen-led neighbor-funded projects. Their mission is to strengthen neighborhoods by supporting the leaders in them who want to make positive change, engaging their neighbors, one block at a time. Crowd-resourcing gives everyone the ability to organize all kinds of capital–cash, social capital, in kind donations, volunteer time, advocacy–from within the community to serve the community.

As a society, we are in a position to study, learn, and innovate more than ever before. Yet there is one major bottleneck: funding. In recent years, it’s become increasingly difficult for new ideas to get off the ground, especially the innovative and high-risk ideas with the biggest impact. ‘Big science’ has become synonymous with ‘budget cuts’. This is about our ability to invest in our future. This is about Science for the people, by the people.
