About this project

TINNITLESS the first collective Tinnitus therapy management device designed to promote plasticity of the central nervous system by exposure to non invasive complex sound energy. I’m a Tinnitus sufferer, also an electronic design engineer with over 40 years experience in audio technology. In 2015 I became aware of how intrusive my Tinnitus was becoming which prompted me to design a personal self help device. Acoustic therapy does at least have scientific backing, yet has a varied success rate.

Why the need for an adaptable Tinnitus management device.

Several blind trials have shown that of the many Tinnitus help strategies including sensory substitution, sound based therapies have been the most successful at promoting selective attention and lowering perceptual processing by the central nervous system.

Success Rate

Why there is the variation in success rate across the wide spectrum of Tinnitus sufferers may be due more to the way therapy is administered than the acoustics of the therapy. The ability to use TINNITLESS as a nocturnal therapy while asleep and the brain is still responsive to sound has shown to have success with some Tinnitus sufferers at promoting neural plasticity. Sound entering the ear canal naturally, stimulates more neural processing and while adapting to the changing parameters of Tinnitus, may be more beneficial to success.

Tinnitus is a complex audiological and neurological condition with many causes but is most commonly linked to hearing loss of one form or another. It’s a serious health condition that can negatively affect a sufferer’s quality of life and there is presently no known cure but with perseverance, the perception of Tinnitus can be significantly reduced. Our goal is to bring TINNITLESS, a device that would be most effective at achieving this, to market. Your contribution will give Tinnitus sufferers the ability to have long term relief.

Presbycusis

We are born with an acoustic range in excess of 10 octaves and a response to sounds as high as 20KHz yet there is virtually no natural sounds above 9KHz. apart from complex harmonics. It is not fully understood why our hearing deteriorates with age as there are many factors involved, thickening of nerve fibers and slowing down of neural transduction signals tend to affect high frequency deterioration first. There has also been research to support the theory that the plasticity of the central nervous system’s function, can also be a result of deprivation of acoustic stimulation. These plastic changes consist of the establishment of new neural connections or elimination of existing ones. Evidence has shown that cells which normally respond to lower audio frequencies, reorganised in favour of higher frequencies as a result of acoustic stimulation. This tonotopic reorganisation affects how spectral information about sound is processed and therefore influences what we hear.

TINNITLESS incorporates in its design the ability to monitor the upper audiogram threshold with acoustic stimulation at adjacent frequencies.
